Origin and life

The Wins family was of aristocratic origin and has been traceable in the Mark Brandenburg since the 14th century . There is different information about the origin of the family: According to some sources, she was originally based in Frankfurt an der Oder , from where family members moved to Berlin and Kölln . According to other sources, the noble family Wins came from Winsen an der Luhe . Thomas Wins' father was Nickel Wins, the first name of the mother , who comes from the Blankenfelde family, is not known. Thomas Wins had four brothers: Michael Wins, Thomas Wins, Coppen Wins and Merten Wins. Thomas Wins became a citizen in the first half of the 15th century.

From 1426 Thomas Wins was - with interruptions - mayor of Berlin for ten periods: from 1426 to 1427, from 1428 to 1429, from 1432 to 1433, from 1434 to 1435, from 1436 to 1437, from 1438 to 1439, from 1440 to 1441, from 1443 to 1444, from 1445 to 1446 and from 1447 to 1448.

According to a decree by Friedrich II of Brandenburg , after the dissolution of the joint council of Berlin and Kölln, confirmation from the elected mayors and council members was necessary. The confirmation of Thomas Wins as mayor is dated April 16, 1443.

Because of his involvement in the uprising against Friedrich II of Brandenburg in 1448/1449, Thomas Wins had to answer to court in Spandau . He and his sons lost the fiefs they had been given , but most of them got back a year later. A fine was also imposed and Wins lost his position as mayor, which was later held by members of the family again.
