Winsviertel
The Winsviertel is a residential area ( Kiez ) in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg ( Pankow district ). It is named after Winsstrasse in the center of the district , which in turn bears the name of Berlin Mayor Thomas Wins .
location
The area between Prenzlauer Allee and Otto-Braun-Straße / Greifswalder Straße is called Winsviertel, which begins in the south on Mollstraße and ends in the north on Danziger Straße . The core of the district is the eponymous Winsstrasse, which runs parallel to Prenzlauer Allee / Greifswalder Strasse. Adjacent residential areas are Ernst-Thälmann-Park in the north, the Bötzowviertel in the east and the Kollwitzkiez in the west. In the south, the quarter borders on the districts of Mitte and Friedrichshain .
Streets and squares in the neighborhood
The eponymous Winsstraße runs inside the Kiez from Danziger Straße to the south to the cemeteries and ends at Heinrich-Roller-Straße. The neighborhood is limited to the east by Greifswalder Strasse and to the west by Prenzlauer Allee.
Your cross streets start in the north on Danziger Straße

Apart from Raabestrasse, which only runs from Winsstrasse to Prenzlauer Allee, the other thoroughfares connect Greifswalder Strasse with Prenzlauer Allee. In the south of the district and separated from Winsstrasse by the cemeteries of the St. Marien and Nicolai parishes and the St. Georgen parishes, the Prenzlauer Berg street runs between Prenzlauer Allee and Greifswalder Strasse. In the densely built-up quarter, on the initiative of the residents, an open space gained by the demolition of the rescue office in 1995 became the town square on Marie on Marienburger Strasse.
The residential area consists of two parts. The development of the Kiez northeast of Heinrich-Roller-Straße was created in the early years and is an old building district, partially closed by Allied air raids of the Second World War. To the southeast from Prenzlauer Berg street along Otto-Braun-Straße (as an extension of Greifswalder Straße), a new building district with WBS 70/11 and two high-rise buildings with 20 floors was created as a result of the GDR housing program . The southern house complex is accessed through Mendelssohnstrasse from Otto-Braunstrasse to Mollstrasse. The southern area was also densely built up as part of the royal city . The destruction in the war led to ruins and partially destroyed houses. With the development planning between Leninplatz (since 1992, United Nations Square ) and Alexanderplatz along Mollstrasse, existing old buildings were cleared and the new residential buildings were carried out westward.
