Thomas of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Clarence
Thomas of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Clarence KG (born September 29, 1388 at Kenilworth Castle , † March 22, 1421 at Baugé in Anjou ) was an English prince.
Thomas was the second surviving son of King Henry IV of England and his wife Mary de Bohun . In 1399 he was beaten on the occasion of his father's coronation to Knight of the Bath and accepted into the Order of the Garter . He was Lord High Steward from 1399 , Governor of Ireland from 1401 to 1413, and Lord High Admiral from 1405 to 1406 .
At the end of 1411, Thomas married Margaret (1381 / 85–1439), the youngest daughter of Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent ( House of Holland ) and widow of John Beaufort, 1st Earl of Somerset . A year later, on July 9, 1412, he was raised to Duke of Clarence and Earl of Aumale . From 1419 he was enfeoffed with the Barony Elbeuf in Normandy , which England had conquered from France.
Thomas accompanied his brother Henry V on his French campaign in 1415 , commanded the troops at the siege of Rouen in 1418 and fell in the battle of Baugé on March 22, 1421 in battle with John de la Croise. Thomas left an illegitimate son, Sir John de Clarence, but no legitimate descendants, so that his titles of nobility were extinguished on his death. He was buried in Canterbury Cathedral.
