Thomy is a brand of the Nestlé food company for delicatessen products such as mayonnaise , mustard , tomato paste , sauces and cooking oil .

history

Fritz Thomi-Schaad started selling mustard on the Swiss market in 1907. Back then it was common to sell mustard openly from earthenware pots. In 1934, the company began selling mustard in tubes, a type of packaging that had not been used for food until then. In the same year, the brand name Thomy , named after the company founder, was used for mustard for the first time . The i was replaced by a y in order to market itself better internationally, as well as for stylistic reasons. From 1951, mayonnaise was also sold in tubes. Thomy brand products have been sold in Germany since 1954.

Alfred Mahler (1913–1995), who was a general staff officer during the Second World War, took over the management of Unifranck in Ludwigsburg in 1949 and took over the delicatessen brand Thomy from Switzerland, is considered to be the inventor of Thomy mayonnaise. Until the 1970s, Thomy belonged to Unifranck Lebensmittelwerke GmbH in Ludwigsburg. Until 1993 Thomy belonged to the Allgäuer Alpenmilch AG in Munich. The majority of Allgäuer Alpenmilch AG was owned by Ursina-Franck AG from Bern, which was acquired by the Nestlé food company in 1971 .

In the 1960s, Thomy advertised in Germany with the slogan "Delicate, Swiss style". The music of the jingle Thomy, which is mainly known from television advertising - here comes the pleasure is a direct takeover from the jazz song My baby just cares for me (first published in 1958, world hit only when it was re-published in 1987 for a Chanel No. 5 advertisement) the singer Nina Simone .

At the end of the 1990s the so-called "Thomy blackmailer" made headlines. From summer 1996 to September 1998, the German-Romanian and trained locksmith contaminated Thomy products with hydrogen cyanide . From "Thomy" he demanded a ransom of 25 million marks in the form of diamonds, which should be brought to him with carrier pigeons . In September 1999 he was sentenced by the Frankfurt District Court to a prison term of eleven years for attempted serious blackmail and for dangerous poisoning. The public prosecutor Wilhelm Möllers had applied for twelve years imprisonment.

Because too few domestic raw materials are processed in the products according to the new Swissness regulation , Thomy has no longer been allowed to use the Swiss cross on the packaging since 2017. After various organic products have already been introduced, Thomy has also been producing mayonnaise in a vegan , glass-packed version since 2017 .
