Tomato paste is made from ripe and sorted tomatoes. Since only the tomato flesh is used, these are first peeled and pitted. After that, the tomato pulp is happening under vacuum and heat thickened and to make it durable, pasteurized .

Tomatoes grown outdoors are mainly used to produce tomato paste . The most important European growing countries are Italy , Spain , Greece and Bulgaria .

The world's largest export nations of tomato paste are: China, Italy, Spain, USA, Portugal (in descending order, as of 2016/2017).

Most of the tomato paste imported into Germany comes from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Turkey and China (the 5 largest importing nations for 2-fold, 3-fold and higher concentrated tomato paste, as of 2017).

The tomato paste is already produced in the growing countries and, if necessary, further processed in the consumer countries. In addition to its use in the kitchen, tomato paste is also a basic ingredient in ketchup .
