The music for the film Thor: Decision Day by Taika Waititi was composed by Mark Mothersbaugh and released for download from Hollywood Records on October 20, 2017 .

production

Until 1991,
Mark Mothersbaugh was the lead singer, keyboard player and guitarist of the American new wave and synth rock band Devo

In August 2016, Mark Mothersbaugh was hired as the composer for the music for the film Thor: Judgment Day by Taika Waititi . Mothersbaugh was familiar with Taika's previous work when he received a call from Marvel. He said he was excited about the opportunity to work together, especially because he shared Taika's interest in retro synths, and was excited to create his own take on the Marvel sound. One allegation directed against previous Marvel films was that the music for them was not very memorable and always sounded somehow similar. Mothersbaugh was the lead singer, keyboardist and guitarist of the American new wave and synth rock band Devo until 1991 and brought elements of these musical styles to the score for Thor: Ragnarok .

The titles of some of the pieces of music included on the soundtrack, such as Thor: Ragnarok , Where's the Sword? and Asgard Is a People refer to the gods of Norse mythology and the Ragnarök , the original title of the film and thus to the legend of the fall of the gods, as prophesied by the Völuspá . The recording was made at Abbey Road Studios in London, and Mothersbaugh co-produced the soundtrack with Alan Meyerson .

The soundtrack for the film consists of 23 pieces of music and was released on October 20, 2017 as download by Hollywood Records and in physical form on November 10, 2017.

reception

The film music critic Mihnea Manduteanu describes Mothersbaugh's work as "music for eternity." He has replaced the lately rather lackluster music for Marvel films with a composition that is exciting, emotional and nostalgic from start to finish and thus sets new standards for the spectacular Action superhero score set. The film music can do without a memorable main theme, as previously created by Brian Tyler or Alan Silvestri for the film universe, Manduteanu continues. With its orchestral as well as its retro-electronic elements, the film music is a festival, according to Manduteanu, because the composer finds the right balance between the two.
