Thorkild Bjørnvig
Thorkild Strange Bjørnvig (born February 2, 1918 in Aarhus ; † March 5, 2004 ibid) was a Danish poet , writer and translator of German poetry.
Life
Thorkild Bjørnvig grew up in Aarhus and later studied comparative literature at Aarhus University . His dissertation on the writer Martin A. Hansen was published in 1964. In 1970 he married the politician Birgit Bjørnvig.
In 1947 he made his debut with the poetry book Stjærnen bag gavlen (Star behind the gable) with descriptions of a young love. From 1948 to 1950 he worked for the magazine Heretica . An important work is the lyric collection Ravnen (The Raven) , published in 1968 ; the title refers to Edgar Allan Poe's poem The Raven . The work consists of 12 chants in which he deals with his fate and stages an exuberant self-reckoning.
“ Samspændt alene ved identitet med / pulserende stjerner, hjerter som banker / kerubisk I rummet, justerer vor hjerte / og sfærisk krummer lineære tanker.
held together by identity with / pulsating stars, cherubic-ethereal / hearts beating in space, adjusts / our heart and bends linear thinking spherically. "
Bjørnvig not only wrote poetry, but was also a poet interpreter and translated many poems from German, including all poems by Rainer Maria Rilke . The subjects of his poetry are shaped by nature, he resisted its destruction by humans; his main motives are childhood, love and death.
The poet was close friends with the writer Karen Blixen . Both became members of the Danish Academy in 1960. He reported on their collaboration and friendship in the first volume of his autobiography, the book Der Pakt , published by Gyldendal in 1974 . (Pagten. With venskab med Karen Blixen) , which was also published in German. In the other volumes he wrote about his childhood, his studies and the time after the war. For the translation of his Rilke poems ( Udsat på hjertets bjerge ) he was awarded the EU Prize for Translators, the Prix Aristeion, which was awarded 20,000 euros in 1996 .
