Thorstein Helstad (born April 28, 1977 in Hamar ) is a Norwegian football player .

Career

The striker began his career as a youth player with Fart / Vang , a small club from his hometown of Hamar. Soon the change followed within the city of Hamar to the much larger Ham-Kam association . After strong performances in the Norwegian first division for Ham-Kam, he drew the interest of several Norwegian first division clubs.

Helstad chose Brann Bergen , for whom he made his debut in the Norwegian first division in 1998. At Brann Bergen, Helstad became a young star. In the 2000 season he was the top scorer in the Tippeligaen for the first time, followed by his first call-up to the Norwegian national football team .

At the end of the 1999 season, Helstad had attracted the interest of several European clubs. This was followed by a month-long transfer hack to change the striker. In May 2000, then Leeds United manager David O'Leary made the first official offer of £ 3 million for Helstad, which Brann Bergen refused. O'Leary, who already had two other Norwegian national players in his team with Alf-Inge Haaland and Eirik Bakke , made no secret of wanting to sign Helstad as a dream player, which Brann pushed the price up. When there was no agreement over the transfer fee in the summer, Brann decided that Helstad should end the season in Norway. After the end of the season in November 2000, Bergen Helstadt, who had long been agreed with Leeds United on the contractual terms, gave permission to train at Leeds United. The move should now take place together with his teammate at Brann Bergen and in the Norwegian U-21 national team Azar Karadaş . But after Brann rejected an application from Leeds to use the two players in a Reserve League game with reference to the risk of injury, the change failed.

Back in Norway, Helstad was able to build on the good performances of the past immediately. He was Norwegian top scorer for the second time with 17 goals in 23 games and also won the Kniksenprisen for the best striker .

In the summer of 2002 Helstad moved in a double pack with his teammate Raymond Kvisvik to Austria for FK Austria Wien . At that time Austria often acted with a 4-3-3 system, with the position of the center forward being reserved for the top goal-getter Sigurd Rushfeldt (68 goals in 124 games for Austria). Thus Helstad was mostly only the unloved position of the winger, which clearly suffered from his goal yield. Nevertheless, Helstad was mostly a regular player and won the league double with Austria.

In summer 2004 he moved to Rosenborg Trondheim . Austria Wien definitely did not want to give up Helstad, who had become a crowd favorite due to his technical skills, but Helstad pressed for a move back home for private reasons. Austria Wien gave Helstad the approval and he moved to Rosenborg Trondheim for € 650,000. Helstad played like Rushfeldt at both Austria Wien and Rosenborg Trondheim. At Rosenborg, Helstad was used again as a center forward, whereupon his goal count rose rapidly again. Helstad played with Rosenborg Trondheim in the UEFA Champions League and won the Norwegian championship in 2004 and 2006 .

In the 2006 season there was again a move to Bergen to SK Brann. The transfer fee was around 500,000 euros. In Bergen, Helstad finally became the Norwegian star striker and in 2007 won the Norwegian championship title again and in the same year was top scorer for the third time with 22 goals in 24 games. In the 2006 season, Helstad was able to set the eternal goal record of his coach Mons Ivar Mjelde for Brann Bergen. He is the club's record goal scorer (89 first division goals for Brann Bergen).

In the 2008 season, Helstad led the Tippeligaen top scorer list with eleven goals in twelve games before another move abroad.

On July 30, 2008, the French first division UC Le Mans announced the commitment of the player. SK Brann and UC Le Mans agreed not to disclose the transfer fee.

National team

For the Norwegian U-21 national team , Helstad completed 30 international matches in which he scored five goals.

After his debut in 2000, Helstad has played 27 full internationals for Norway to date. He scored nine goals. He has been denied participation in a major soccer tournament to this day. Helstad is currently a regular in the Norwegian national team.

Helstad is the owner of the "Golden Clock". This is awarded to every Norwegian national player who has completed 25 senior team appearances.
