Thorsten Jungmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thorsten Jungmann (born January 21, 1977 in Bochum ) is a German university professor , engineer and didactician. Since April 2016 he has been professor for technical didactics at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences . He teaches and researches in the field of technical didactics in vocational education.

Life

After graduating from high school , which Thorsten Jungmann took in 1996 at the Eickel high school in Herne , he completed a dual course of study in mechatronics at the Bochum University of Applied Sciences (now Bochum University of Applied Sciences) . In 1998 he completed vocational training as an energy electronics technician at Adam Opel AG in Bochum and completed his degree in engineering. While studying abroad at London South Bank University , he obtained a master's degree in mechatronics. In his thesis he devoted himself to the telemetry system of a solar-powered racing car.

From 2001 to 2006 Thorsten Jungmann worked as a systems engineer in the automotive industry. He developed and implemented IT-based solutions for the automation of production and logistics in manufacturing facilities in the European automotive industry.

From 2006 to 2010 Thorsten Jungmann worked at the Chair for Factory Organization (LFO) at TU Dortmund University. There he worked in the field of modeling and simulation of logistic processes. In 2011 Thorsten Jungmann moved to the University Didactic Center (HDZ) at TU Dortmund University, where he took over the management of the competence and service center for teaching and learning in engineering (TeachING-LearnING.EU) and, under the direction of Johannes Wildt, set up the research group in engineering didactics .

In 2011 Jungmann completed his doctorate at the Mechanical Engineering Faculty of the TU Dortmund with the grade “very good”. In his doctoral thesis, which was supervised by Axel Kuhn and Johannes Wildt, he developed and evaluated a model for research-based learning in engineering. In doing so, he made a didactic principle usable for technical courses that had previously been used successfully in teaching, social and humanities courses to design student-centered and science-related teaching and learning formats.

In 2012 Thorsten Jungmann was appointed professor of engineering (focus on mechatronics, electronics and logistics) at the FOM University . There he developed and implemented new engineering courses from 2013 to 2015. During this period, he was in charge of the newly founded engineering department and worked continuously on the development and expansion of engineering courses at the FOM study centers in Germany.

In April 2016, Jungmann was appointed professor for engineering principles and technical didactics at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences. In the engineering and mathematics department, he teaches and researches in the field of technology didactics.

Since December 2018 Jungmann has been awarded the title "Honorary Doctor" from the Novgorod State University.

Thorsten Jungmann's work began in 2011 following his doctorate, which was nominated for the German Study Prize in 2012 . He is now putting his theoretical work into practice. At the Center for Higher Education at TU Dortmund University, he sets up the research group for engineering didactics, founds and heads the competence and service center "TeachING-LearnING.EU" and then initiates the project "Excellent teaching and learning in engineering (ELLI)" at the University Didactic Center of the TU Dortmund. In these projects, he also founds the research workshop for engineering courses, in which students can experience the part of the scientific and methodological training that is neglected in the specialist courses according to his research findings. This first phase ends with his appointment to the FOM University.

In the second phase of his work, Jungmann built up the Jungmann Institute from 2013, whose team conducts advanced training courses at 30 universities (as of 2016) from Kiel to Konstanz and from Aachen to Dresden, thus contributing to the further development of the quality of teaching in Germany.

The third phase of his work began in 2016 when he was appointed to the professorship for technology didactics in Bielefeld. Jungmann brings its expertise at the interface between technology and didactics to work with schools, universities and companies. He is committed to improving the educational opportunities of the children in his hometown by promoting their math skills inside and outside of school. He is involved in the German Society for University Didactics (dghd) on a voluntary basis and, as co-founder and spokesman of the AG Ingenieurdidaktik AG, is the contact person for universities in matters of higher education didactic training and course development. In his lectures and seminars, he conveys theoretical backgrounds as well as practical examples and personal experiences. In the Edu-Tech Net OWL project, Jungmann is involved in overcoming the shortage of teachers in the commercial-technical subjects at the vocational college. In the Leonardo - Moving Inventions project , he brings engineering students closer to the life's work of the artist-engineer Leonardo da Vinci from a research perspective . As an expert in the field of digitization in education, Jungmann has been working with the Novgorod State University in Russia since 2017, which will award him an honorary doctorate for his commitment on December 7, 2018.

Jungmann is the author of book and magazine articles.
