Thorsten Wahlers

Thorsten Wahlers (born February 8, 1958 in Kaltenkirchen , Germany ) is a German cardiac and thoracic surgeon and university professor.

Life

After studying medicine at the Universities of Bonn , Düsseldorf and Cologne, Wahlers passed the medical state examination at the University of Cologne and received his doctorate in 1983 from the cardiologist Hans Hermann Hilger on the "Influence of oxyfedrine on bradycardia cardiac arrhythmias in humans". He then began his surgical training at the Center for Surgery at the Hannover Medical School and completed his training in 1989 as a specialist in surgery. In 1990 he became a senior physician at the Clinic for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and in 1991 was recognized as a specialist in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery and as a specialist in vascular surgery . In 1992 he completed his habilitation in Hanover with an animal experiment on organ protection in heart-lung transplantation and in 1995 became the clinic's senior physician. In 1996 he was appointed adjunct professor at the Hannover Medical School.

In 1999 he was appointed full professor of cardiac surgery at the University of Jena and took over the management of the newly opened clinic for cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery. In November 2005 he took over the full professorship for cardiac surgery, cardiac surgery intensive medicine and thoracic surgery at the University Hospital Cologne .

Together with his cardiologist colleague Erland Erdmann , they moved into the newly built heart center at the University of Cologne in 2007. In 2012 Stephan Baldus succeeded Erdmann there.

In addition to the purely surgical tasks, Wahlers is also responsible for the implantation of catheter-supported heart valve systems (TAVI) together with his cardiological colleagues in the heart team.

His activities also focus on complex bypass surgery (with and without a heart-lung machine), minimally invasive valve surgery including all catheter-interventional procedures, surgery for aneurysms and dissections of the main artery, performing second and third operations, and implanting Heart support devices and heart and lung transplants as well as thoracic surgery in cooperation with Khosro Hekmat (since 2012). In addition, he was able to establish an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) program in Cologne, which is also available for other centers for patients under resuscitation.

Thorsten Wahlers advised the Federal Republic of Germany in 1996 on the heart operation of Russian President Boris Yeltsin . He works as a reviewer for the German Society for Thoracic, Cardiovascular Surgery, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and the Federal Ministry of Health as well as for the German Research Foundation and the BMBF. In an international context, he advised on the further development of the medical university and care situation in St. Petersburg. In 2019 he established a cooperation with the San Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Ghuangzou, China. Many of his students have taken on leading positions in cardiac and vascular surgery in Europe (Graz-Prof. Cohnert, Bernau-Prof. Albes, Stuttgart-Prof. Franke, Bochum-Prof. Strauch, Magdeburg-Prof. Wippermann, Bad Nauheim -Prof. Choi).

Awards

As part of his scientific work, he has received various research awards (selection):

  • 1989 the Presidents Award of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation,
  • 1992 the Ethicon Prize of the German Society for Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery and
  • 1993 the Köhler Prize of the German Society for Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery.

Since 2014, the Cologne Cardiovascular Summit has been held annually in Cologne as a national congress together with the cardiology department.

He published more than 520 scientific papers (01-2020) in national and international journals.
