reception

According to Mike Joyce, who reviewed the album in JazzTimes , whether it is the lines of jazz patriarch Bucky Pizzarelli or those of his son John, who creates melodic embellishments and spins improvisations with one note, the level is on the album the musicality consistently high. The same goes for the clever support from guitarist Ed Laub, which is hardly surprising given his long collaboration with father Pizzarelli. Even the most weather-beaten selection of obscure titles, according to the author, has “a fresh appeal after Bucky and John got their hands on them. Blue notes optimize the melodies, harmonic substitutions give texture and color, tricky contrapuntal passages abound, and frequent rhythmic drive waves provide exciting moments. The liveliest trio appearances are offset by some soulful interludes, a dash of melancholy lyrics, and the occasional, skillfully executed duet formation, including a duo constellation of Bucky and Ed Laub.
