Threecastles Castle

Threecastles Castle ( Irish Caisleán Bhaile na dTrí Chaisleán ) is the ruin of a tower house near Blessington in County Wicklow, Ireland . It is considered a national monument .

description

Threecastles Castle is a three-story tower house with a rectangular floor plan. A stair tower juts out from the northeast corner. Originally there was also an extension on the west side of the Tower House, which can be deduced from the remains of the barrel vault at this point. The upper floor has another vaulted ceiling . On the first floor there is an open fireplace and a lavatory . The walls are 1.2 to 1.5 meters thick and clad with granite ashlar . The castle stands on an eastern slope over a ford of the River Liffey .

history

The history of Niederungsburg is not clear, but based on its name it is believed that there was more than one castle in this townland . The location of one of the other two castles can be seen from an Ordnance Survey map from the 19th century, the location of the third castle is not known. Threecastles Castles was probably built in the 16th century for the then Lord Deputy of Ireland , Gerald FitzGerald , 8th Earl of Kildare . A number of battles took place there in the 1500s. But some also think that the name of the castle means that it had three parts.
