Location of Thurn in Wuppertal |
The location of Thurn or Am Thurn in the Sonnborn residential area in the Elberfeld-West district of Wuppertal goes back to an old farm name. The location on the edge of the Sonnborn Cross is built over, remnants of the old court have not been preserved.
etymology
The origin of the name "Am Thurn" comes from a fortified tower or peasant tower mentioned as early as the 14th century , which served the peasant population as a refuge in times of need and war, and belonged to the Lüntenbeck estate about 1.4 kilometers further north . In a document in 1356 a "Tyelen zum turne schaffenen (= Schöffe) zu Sunburne" was named.
Today's street
The street Am Thurn is named after the location of June 17, 1890 . The road was expanded in 1896/97; it ran from Sonnborner Strasse to the west to the municipality boundary in Vohwinkel on Heinrich-Heine-Strasse. On December 21, 1951, the western part in Heinrich-Heine-Strasse was included. After the construction of the Sonnborner Kreuz, the street Am Thurn leads as an inner-city road bridge over the motorway junction.
