description

Thymus comptus is a small shrub whose flower-bearing stems are up to 15 cm long and grow upwards and lignify at the base. The non-flower-bearing stems are only short and prostrate. All stems are dense all around and mostly sticky tomentose hairs. The leaves are 9 to 15 mm long and 0.5 to 2 (rarely up to 3) mm wide. They are linear to lanceolate, more or less pointed and ciliate up to about the middle and sparsely hairy. The veining is clear, the midrib protrudes, the lateral veins are almost parallel.

The inflorescences are up to 10 mm long and consist of separate, multi-flowered false whorls. The bracts are similar to the foliage leaves, but shorter and wider and provided with clearer side veins. The calyx is (rarely only 3 to) 4 to 5 mm long, the lips are about the same length. The upper teeth are up to 1.5 cm long, covered with awning, eyelashes or only have single-cell scales.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28 or 52.

Occurrence and locations

The species occurs in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula , in Bulgaria, in Greece and in the European part of Turkey, where it is mostly found near the coast.
