Thymus leptophyllus is a plant type from the genus of thyme ( Thymus ) in the family of Labiatae .

Thymus leptophyllus is a small shrub that resembles Thymus bracteatus but is smaller overall. forms with long, slender, upwardly curved to prostrate, non-flower-bearing stems , from which about 1.5 to 4 cm long, upright to ascending, flower-bearing and hairy stems as well as axillary clusters of deciduous leaves extend. These are 5 to 8 mm long and 1 to 1.5 mm wide. They are herbaceous, pale green, hairless, ciliate at the base and usually petiolate.

The inflorescences are head-shaped to somewhat elongated, with the lowest false whorl standing a little away. The bracts are up to 2 mm wide, resemble the foliage leaves, are elliptical to narrowly ovate, mostly protruding beyond the sham whorls, pale green and ciliate. The calyx is 3.5 to 5 mm long, the calyx-tube is bell-shaped to almost cylindrical and hairy and significantly shorter than the lips. The upper teeth are about 1 to 1.5 cm long, narrowly lanceolate and ciliate. The crown is whitish in color.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.

Occurrence and locations

The species occurs in the middle and east of Spain . It grows in drier regions and lower altitudes than Thymus bracteatus .

Systematics

One can distinguish three subspecies:

  • Thymus leptophyllus subsp. izcoi (Rivas Mart., A.Molina & G.Navarro) R.Morales : It occurs in the middle of Spain.
  • Thymus leptophyllus subsp. leptophyllus : It occurs in eastern Spain.
  • Thymus leptophyllus subsp. paui R.Morales : It occurs in eastern Spain.
