The Corsican tortoise- shell insect ( Thyreonotus corsicus ) is a long- probe insect from the subfamily of the Tettigoniinae within the superfamily of the grasshopper . There are two subspecies.

features

The Corsican shield insect is similar in body to the green shrub insect , but is even stronger and differently colored. The abdomen is short and thick, the pronotum is strongly elongated backwards. The pronotum lateral lobes reach far down. The lower legs of all pairs of legs have small spines, these are longer and further apart on the front pairs of legs. The male's wings protrude only a little under the pronotum; in the female they are completely covered and cannot be seen in the wild. The antennae are about body length. The basic color of the species is light gray or yellow-gray to gray-brown. A more or less distinct marbling extends over the entire body. There is a dark, broad band above the gray, slightly dotted compound eyes with a dark point in the middle. It is continued somewhat lighter on the pronotum, the side lobes of which are colored whitish and only weakly dotted. The lower and inner thighs of the legs are dark gray-brown. A broad, dark gray band stretches across the sides of the abdomen, narrowing slightly towards the back on each segment, creating a zigzag pattern. The female has a straight ovipositor . The male's cerci are flattened and have a platelet-like extension with a tiny tooth on the inside. The Corsican shield insect reaches a body length of 20 to 32 millimeters.

Way of life and distribution

The Corsican tortoise shell predominantly lives in low and very dense bushes, into which it can quickly retreat in case of danger. It occurs in the western Mediterranean . Their distribution area extends from the Iberian Peninsula across southern France to the fringes of the southwestern Alps. Isolated occurrences can be found in Corsica and Sardinia .
