The green shrub insect ( Eupholidoptera chabrieri ) is a long- feeler insect from the subfamily of the Tettigoniinae within the superfamily of the leaf locust . Seven subspecies are distinguished for which there has long been disagreement about the validity of these taxa .

Green shrub insect

features

The green shrub insect can easily be distinguished from other central European long-antennae terrors by its body structure and its color, however, on the southern Balkan peninsula and in Italy, very similar species from the genus Eupholidoptera can sometimes be found. The species is remarkably long legs, has a thick abdomen and a flat, far to the rear elongated neck plate . This covers over half of the tiny dark brown wings. The lower legs of all pairs of legs have small thorns that are further apart on the front pairs of legs. The antennae are longer than the body. The basic color of the insect is green to light green and yellow-green. Various black drawings run across the body. From the antennae to the posterior edge of the pronotum, a broad band, often broken up into spots, especially on the head and the anterior pronotum, extends which delimits a yellow-green edge of the lateral pronotum. The belly is flesh-colored. All thighs have a pattern of black dots, of which the rear thigh is particularly noticeable. There are thin horizontal stripes that are interrupted by a light green thigh center line. The joint regions of the legs are darkly colored. The lower legs are often gray or brown in contrast to the rest of the body. The last segment of the abdomen is colored black. The compound eyes are dark brown. The body color, especially the pattern, can vary depending on the subspecies. The female has a slightly curved ovipositor that is slightly shorter than the body. The green shrub insect reaches a body length of 20 to 30 millimeters.

Way of life and distribution

The song of the green shrub insect consists of short, high-frequency individual sounds, which are usually performed in series at a distance of a few seconds.

It inhabits forest edges, clearings and bushes and can be found there on shrubs, mainly on prickly or thorny plants. It is very nimble and quickly hides in thorn bushes in case of danger, which is why it is difficult to catch. Their distribution area extends from the Balkan Peninsula via Italy to southern France . It is absent in both Austria and Germany ; its northernmost occurrences are in South Tyrol and in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland . In the northern Upper Palatinate (Bavaria) a male was recently spotted in 07/2018. The adults occur from July to September.

Systematics

The green shrub insect was originally described under the scientific name Locusta chabrieri . The species was assigned to the genera Pterolepis , Thamnotrizon and Pholidoptera by some authors , some subspecies were listed as separate species or placed as subspecies to species no longer valid today, for example E. c. bimucronata to the now no longer recognized species Pholidoptera schmidti , or Eupholidoptera schmidti (today Eupholidoptera chabrieri schmidti ).

So far, the following subspecies have been distinguished:

Synonyms of the subspecies E. c. brunneri are beybienkoi , marani and malachiticus . Synonyms of the subspecies E. c. schmidti are kaltenbachi and magnifica .
