The Tibet cypress ( Cupressus gigantea ) is a species of the genus cypress from the family of cypress plants (Cupressaceae). It is native to southeast Tibet.

description

The Tibet cypress grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of 25 to 50 meters and a diameter of 1 to 6 meters at chest height . Young trees have a fibrous, orange-brown bark that turns dark brown to gray with age. Furthermore, it becomes thicker and narrow ridges are formed. The open crown is irregularly conical in shape. The 1.2 to 2 millimeter thick twigs are blue-green in color and stand close together, but never hanging from the branches.

The scale-like and curved leaves are blue-green in color. They stand tightly against the branches. A round gland can be found on the underside of the leaf.

The blue-green cones are elongated-spherical shaped with a length of 1.5 to 2 centimeters and a width of 1.3 to 1.6 centimeters. They consist of twelve cone scales, each of which carries several seeds.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Distribution and location

The natural range of the Tibetan cypress is in the southeast of Tibet . They can be found there in the Dihang gorges and in the river valleys of the Nyang Qu and the Nize .

The Tibet cypress thrives at altitudes of 3000 to 3400 meters. It grows mainly in river valleys and on these adjacent mountain slopes.

Systematics

It was first described as Cupressus gigantea in 1975 by Wan Chun Cheng and Li Kuo Fu in Acta Phytotaxonomica Sinica 13 (4), pp. 85-86, pl. 16, f. 1 . In 2005 it was founded by Aljos K. Farjon in Monogr. Cupressaceae Sciadopitys, p. 224 as a variety of the Himalayan cypress ( Cupressus torulosa ). However, some authors list it as a separate species.

If it is listed as a separate species, two subspecies are occasionally distinguished:

  • Cupressus gigantea subsp. gigantea is the nominate form.
  • Cupressus gigantea subsp. tongmaiensis (Silba) Silba . Synonyms are Cupressus tongmaiensis Silba , Cupressus gigantea subsp. ludlowii (Silba) Silba , Cupressus austrotibetica subsp. tongmaiensis (Silba) Silba and Cupressus tongmaiensis var. ludlowii Silba .

Hazard and protection

The Tibetan cypress is classified as "Endangered" on the IUCN Red List . However, it is pointed out that a new check of the hazard is necessary.
