Deep Hardthöhle (Wuppertal)
Deep hard cave
Type: Karst cave
Discovery: 2015
Overall length: 120 m

The depth Hardt cavity is about 120 m long cavity in Wuppertal urban area, in Hardtberg .

Location and description

Access to the Tiefen Hardthöhle is in the Hardtstollen , a construction project for a cavern power station that was abandoned in the 1960s. The tunnel is located at the southern foot of the Hardtberg and is locked to prevent unauthorized entry. In some cases, the tunnel walls were provided with steel girders and corrugated sheets to support the tunnel walls. The deep hard cave is cut at around 200 meters in length ; the access to it was behind the tunnel cladding until the 2015 investigation. The access is at the top of the tunnel, as a passage the cave continues here in west and east direction. The exploration of both ends was not yet completed in 2016, but more than 120 m could be measured.

A ventilation of this cave at both ends suggests that a connection to the cave system of the Hardthöhlen could exist.

history

Fossil in the Hardt tunnel (2016)

It had long been known that a small cave - the deep hard cave - was cut during tunneling. The working group Kluterthöhle e. V. (AKKH) tried to be allowed to examine the access to the facility around the tunnel and the small cave. A contractual agreement was concluded between the city, the municipal utilities and the AKKH. This system has been officially supervised by the AKKH since 2015 and the Deep Hardth Cave has been measured and researched. Instead of the previously known length of 5 m, it was now measured over 100 m, making it a central cave .

During the piercing, the cave in a phreatic zone was under water. It is said that thousands of cubic meters of water flowed out of the cave over several days. Until then, a length of over 5 m was known. During the 2015 exploration, the cave was found to be heavily silted up. As a result, it was painstakingly cleaned, and exceptionally well-preserved fossils could be documented. The exploration was initially driven in a westerly direction, which was possible over around 30 m. After removing a blockage of clay, it was possible to advance another 20 to 25 m. Then the eastern corridor was explored, which turned out to be very humid due to a small stream flowing through it. Here you could penetrate around 30 m.

On the day of the Geotope 2015, almost 200 interested guests were allowed to take part in a special tour of the AKKH in the Hardt tunnel, but the Deep Hardt Cave was excluded. This action was repeated in 2016.
