The Hardt tunnel with the Hardtkaverne located in Wuppertal city, in Hardtberg . The original aim in the 1960s was to build and install a cavern power plant here to absorb peak loads in the local power supply . The construction project was stopped before completion and remained unfinished into the 21st century.

The access to the Tiefen Hardthöhle is in the tunnel . The cave and the tunnel are of speleological interest.

The entrance to the Hardt tunnel is on the “Hardtufer” street in the Barmen district on the border with the Elberfeld district . The access at the southern foot of the Hardtberg and near the bank of the Wupper is locked to prevent unauthorized entry. The excavation of the tunnel in the mountains was to below the Bismarck tower driven deep in mountain into some 250 meters. The rock cover at the apex of the Hardtberg at the Bismarck tower is around 60 to 80 m.

At the end of the tunnel is the Great Cavern or the Hardtkarverne . Aircraft turbines for power generation were originally intended to be installed here. The exhaust system was to be led up to the Bismarck tower. The Bismarck tower itself should serve as a chimney . The cavern has a clearance height of around 20 meters. In some cases, the tunnel walls were provided with steel girders and corrugated sheets as an extension to support the tunnel walls.

The deep hard cave is cut at around 200 meters in length ; the access to it was behind the tunnel cladding until the 2015 investigation. A ventilation of this cave suggests that a connection to the cave system of the Hardtöhlen could exist.

In order to build a nuclear-bombproof energy supply in the form of a cavern power station , a tunnel was driven into the mountain on the Hardtufer during the “ Cold War ” in the 1960s . During the drive, not only the slate typical of the Honsel layers , but also limestone was driven through. However, the interior of the mountain did not provide enough water to operate such a power plant. So the project was canceled and the tunnel that had been started was closed tightly. The construction of the peak power plant should achieve a maximum total output of 75 MW in the largest expansion stage and was operated by Wuppertaler Stadtwerke AG . That should cost 46 million DM. The plant should be ready for operation at the beginning of the winter half-year 1970/71, that was the statement made in mid-1968. At that time, the lack of space in the valley was argued as a reason why they wanted to build a power plant. In August 1968 an information leaflet “Das Kraftwerk im Hardtberg” was published.

During an investigation into a possible bat population , the steel door at the entrance was found still welded in winter 2006/2007.

It had long been known that a small cave - the deep hard cave - would be cut during tunneling. The working group Kluterthöhle e. V. (AKKH) tried since 1994 to be allowed to examine the access to the facility around the tunnel and the small cave. A contractual agreement was concluded between the city, the municipal utilities and the AKKH. This system has been officially supervised by the AKKH since 2015. Shortly after the contract was signed, the Deep Hardth Cave was measured and explored. The previously known length was extended from 5 to over 100 meters, making it a central cave .

On the day of the Geotope 2015, almost 200 interested guests were allowed to take part in a special tour of the AKKH in the Hardt tunnel. This action was repeated in 2016.
