history
The Gettorf zoo emerged from the private animal collection of its founder Karl-Heinz Bumann and was opened in 1968. Since then, the zoo has been expanded again and again with new buildings, enclosures and other facilities. To this day, the Gettorf zoo has been run purely as a private family company.

With an area of four hectares , the Gettorf zoo is one of the smaller zoos. The facilities include two tropical halls and a free-flight aviary . The enclosures are arranged according to the continent of origin of the animals kept, there is also a petting zoo and two forest trails . The Gettorf Zoo is involved in the European Endangered Species Program (EEP) .
Animals
According to the company, around 800 animals from 120 different species can be viewed.
Primates
One focus is on the keeping of monkeys , with considerable successes in breeding . The primate species kept in their own enclosures include a. Chimpanzees , crested macaques , white-handed gibbons , ring-tailed lemurs , barbary macaques and tamarins .
Tropical birds
Another focus is on the keeping and breeding of hornbills and parrots native to the tropics , including Papuan maples , annual birds , amazons , gray parrots , cockatoos , rock parakeets and other parrots. Other bird species on display include a. Ostrich quails , balistars , three-colored starlings , Victoria crowned pigeons , two-colored fruit pigeons , green-winged pigeons , red earth pigeons , opal pigeons and red-hooded turacos .
Africa plant
The following species can be found in this enclosure: Böhm's plains zebras , eland antelopes , damara goats and dwarf zebus .
Australia plant
Here you can find kangaroos ( Bennett and Tammar wallabies ) from Australia .
South America plant
Flatland tapirs and rheas from South America are at home in this enclosure .
petting zoo
In the petting zoo, pygmy goats and Cameroon sheep are freely accessible, especially for children, but also for all other visitors.
Others
Various other species held include; a. Meerkats , alpacas , mane jumpers , prairie dogs , fallow deer , six-banded armadillos , flamingos , peacocks and various turtles , cranes , turkeys and other birds.
