The Animal Breeding Act (TierZG) is the relevant source of law in German law for the breeding of certain types of farm animals . It applies to the breeding and trading of the following animals (§ 1 Paragraph 1):

1. Purebred animals and pre-booked animals

2. Hybrid breeding pigs .

The first unifying norm for animal breeding was the law on the promotion of animal breeding of March 17, 1936 ( RGBl. I p. 175). The more detailed substantive content was found in the First Ordinance on the Promotion of Animal Breeding of May 26, 1936 (RGBl . I p. 470), which in broad outline was also retained in the first version of the Animal Breeding Act of 7 July 1949 ( WiGBl. P. 181). Since then the TierZG has seen several revisions and new notices, most recently on December 21, 2006 ( Federal Law Gazette I p. 3294).

The law was revised on January 18, 2019 ( Federal Law Gazette I p. 18 ) in order to adapt it to the European Union's Animal Breeding Ordinance of June 8, 2016.

Similar provisions on animal breeding are in Switzerland in the federal law on agriculture (Agriculture Act, LwG) of April 29, 1998 and in Austria in laws of the individual federal states , e.g. B. in the law on animal breeding in Vienna (Vienna Animal Breeding Act) of February 5, 2010.
