The Timberland Industries Inc. (1968-1972 Western Pacific Industries, 1972-1977 Pacific Western Industries) was an American company in the timber industry . The group was taken over by Weyerhaeuser in 1987 .

history

In the late 1960s, the brothers Ian MacDonald (1929-2003), James Allan MacDonald (1922-2007) and Donald MacDonald (1923-2008) decided to merge their companies. The basis for this was provided by Donald MacDonald's Western Plywood Company , founded in 1953 and renamed Western Prefinish Woodwork Company in 1966 . After the company structure was changed and the name was changed to Western Pacific Industries in June 1968, the companies were acquired by James Allen MacDonald ( MacDonald-Miller Company ) and Ian MacDonald ( Cal-Wood Door Corporation ). The three corporate divisions were largely run independently. Western Prefinish Woodworkproduced ready-to-install wooden construction elements (kitchens, stairs, doors etc.), MacDonald-Miller was a manufacturer of air conditioning and ventilation devices and Cal-Wood Door was one of the largest door manufacturers on the US west coast. In addition, the companies Hinton Jones & Co. (investments), Brennan Supply Co. (tools, lights, etc.), Materials Handlings Associates Inc. (bulk transport) and Timberland Forest Products Inc. (timber trade) were acquired by the end of 1968 .

After the railway company Western Pacific Railroad had given itself a new structure in 1970 with the establishment of the holding company Western Pacific Industries , the company previously known as Western Pacific Industries was forced to rename itself. Pacific Western Industries was chosen as the new name. This change took effect in 1972.

The beginning recession at the beginning of the 1970s led to a high loss of business in 1970 and to a reorganization of the company's management. J. Allen MacDonald took over the presidency from his brother Donald MacDonald.

The Brennan Supply Co. also took over the production of wood components and furniture in 1971 and created the subsidiary Brennan Western Inc. To reduce the debt has also been participating in 1971 Hinton Jones & Co. sold again and inefficient material handling Associates Inc. liquidated. In 1972 Donald MacDonald left the company and the Western Prefinish Woodwork Company was separated from the group of companies. However, part of the production remains in the group. At the same time, shares in Pacific Western Industries were offered for sale on the open market.

In March 1974, the assets of a carpentry company were the newly founded Brennan Western Millwork Inc. purchased. In June 1974 the subsidiary Western Modular Corporation was founded that manufactured modular houses . The company's main market was Alaska .

In 1975 the production of wooden construction elements, carpentry products and furniture production were combined in the new subsidiary Western Cabinet and Millwork . After taking over the fixed assets of an insolvent company, the production of wooden panels was started under the name Welsh Panel from mid-1975. On October 1, 1975, the MacDonald-Miller Company was sold to two employees of the company.

On May 18, 1977, the company's name was changed to Timberland Industries Inc. The share capital was doubled by issuing additional shares. Western Modular was renamed Timberland Homes and Welsh Panel was renamed Timberland Panel . In late 1979, Timberland Panel ceased production due to inefficiency. Western Cabinet and Millwork moved into new manufacturing facilities in Woodinville in the same year .

The recession at the beginning of the 1980s forced Timberland Industries to sell the uneconomical subsidiaries Timberland Forest Products Inc. and Timberland Homes in 1980 . After the market slowly recovered, the window manufacturer WindowsVisions Inc. was acquired in 1983 . As exports increased rapidly, the export subsidiary Timberland International Inc. was founded. Brennan Supply was split up in June 1983 into the two business areas Brennan Lightning (requirements for residential building) and Brennan Commercial (requirements for commercial buildings, fire doors etc.). Western Cabinet and Millwork had an assembly plant in Hawaii from 1984 .

On November 19, 1987 Timberland Industries was taken over by the Weyerhaeuser Company mainly because of Cal-Wood Door . As a result, the Timberland Group was broken up and companies that did not fit into the Weyerhaeuser portfolio were sold again.
