Kallistos Ware also known by his maiden name Timothy Ware (born September 11, 1934 in Bath , England ) is a Bishop of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople , Professor of Orthodox Studies at Oxford University and author of numerous books on the Orthodox Church.

Timothy Ware was born in Bath, in the south west of England, in 1934. He grew up an Anglican, attended Westminster School on a scholarship and then Oxford University, where he received First Honors degrees in Classical Literature and Theology. At the age of 24 he converted to the Greek Orthodox Church . Subsequently he spent a few years in Greece , on Mount Athos and in Jerusalem . In 1966 he was ordained a priest and entered the monastery of St. John the Theologian in Patmos as a monk, where he was named "Kállistos".

In the same year he began teaching Orthodox studies at Oxford University, a position he held for 35 years until his resignation. In 1982 he was appointed auxiliary bishop of the bishop of the archdiocese of Thyatira and Great Britain of the Ecumenical Patriarchate consecrated titular bishop of Diokleia. Thyateira is also a titular bishopric . He remained in Oxford as bishop and continued his office as parish priest of the Oxford Greek Orthodox Congregation.

In 2001, he retired from Oxford for reasons of age, but continues to publish and travel extensively to give lectures on the Orthodox Church.

On March 31, 2007, Kallistus Ware was appointed Metropolitan of Diocleia.

Works

Kallistos Ware is best known as the author of the non-fiction book The Orthodox Church , which he published as a layman in 1963 and has since revised several times. The book is widely considered to be the best English-language introduction to the history and structure of the Orthodox Church. It appears under his maiden name Timothy Ware. In 1995, under the name Kallistos Ware, he published a more spiritual companion work The Orthodox Way (German The Ascent to God ).

Most important, however, are his translations. Together with GE Palmer and Philip Sherrard , he translates the Philocalie , so far four of five volumes have been published. He has also translated important liturgical texts.
