Timpendean Tower , also type ends Castle , the ruins of a lowland castle ( Tower House ) from the 15th century in Lanton , about 2.4 km northwest of Jedburgh in the Scottish administration unit Scottish Borders .
history
The Tower House was a fortress of the Clan Douglas . Today the ruin is a Scheduled Monument .
The land in this area, once part of the Bonjedward Estate , was long owned by the Douglas clan and was inherited within the family until it was sold by George, 12th of Timpendean in 1843 to the Scott family , farmers of Bonjedward . Timpendean Tower was burned down in 1545 by the Earl of Hertford's people during Rough Wooing .

The castle ruins are located on a slope between the River Teviot and Jed Water . It was a simple tower with a footprint of 8.7 meters by 7.2 meters with 1.2 meters thick walls.
The tower, which is surrounded by much older earthworks , had three floors and a basement with a vaulted ceiling . There is evidence of an annex that has now disappeared; Connecting stones between two walls have been discovered, so it can be assumed that other walls were previously connected to the existing ones. The door in the east wall and the open fireplace on the ground floor are later additions to the original tower.
A knight's hall was housed on the 1st floor , while the bedrooms were on the 2nd floor. These floors were reached via a spiral staircase on the east wall. Parts of the surrounding earthworks were connected and filled with water to defend the tower.
