Martina Hermina Antonia Strik , better known as Tineke Strik (born September 28, 1961 in Alphen ) is a Dutch politician of the GroenLinks . From 2007 to 2019, Strik represented GroenLinks in the First Chamber of the States General . She won a mandate in the 2019 European elections and has been a member of the ninth European Parliament since then.

Life

Education and professional career

From 1979 to 1983 Tineke Strik studied social work at the “Den Elzent” academy in Eindhoven. From 1981 to 1985 she worked as a youth worker in the cultural youth center “de Effenaar” in Eindhoven. She graduated from 1985 to 1991 with a degree in international public law at the Catholic University of Nijmwegen , and from 1989 to 1991 she also studied Turkish.

From 1990 to 1993 Strik worked as a paralegal at the youth counseling center in Amsterdam. In 1994/95 she added a law degree at the same university to her previous studies. In addition, she acquired specializations in various areas of law, including martial law, European law and administrative law, through several courses at the Red Cross, Clingersael and at the University of Utrecht . From 1993 to 1996 she worked for the Dutch Refugee Council as a legal protection advisor. She then worked for a year as a clerk at the Aliens Chamber of the District Court of Zwolle.

In 1997 she switched to politics and became a member of GroenLinks , but initially worked as an employee for the party: She worked as a judicial politician in the Second Chamber of the States General of GroenLinks. From 2001 to 2002 she worked as a political coordinator in the Ministry of Justice.

Political career

From 2002 to 2006 she was city councilor for social affairs, including youth work, culture and minority politics in Wageningen .

All in all, she held various positions at GroenLinks, especially in the area of ​​strategic and programmatic work for the green left party: She was a member of the party's strategic advisor, advised local and national politicians, and was a member of Strik from 2005 to 2006 of the program committee for the GroenLinks election manifesto. In 2008 she was a member of the GroenLinks European Election Program Committee, in 2012 she was a member of the committee that wrote the program for the House of Commons, and in 2013 she was Chair of the European Election Program Committee.

Strik has been a member of the Dutch First Chamber of States General (also known as the Senate ) since 2007 . For her party, she was the spokesperson for justice, European affairs, social affairs and foreign affairs. As a senator, Strik was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe .

In 2008, Strik announced her candidacy for the GroenLinks European election list, but could not prevail over Judith Sargentini in the election for the list .

In 2011 she was voted second on the GroenLinks Senate electoral list. Four years later, she topped GroenLinks' electoral list. In the 2015-2019 legislature, she assumed the chairmanship of the party in the Senate. At the end of the legislature, she announced that she did not want to run for the Senate again, and instead tried to win a place on the party's electoral list for the 2019 European elections . The delegates voted her second behind top candidate Bas Eickhout . In the election, GroenLinks won significantly more votes and thus three of the 26 Dutch mandates. Together with her two elected colleagues from the group The Greens / EFA . For the group, she is a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs , and a deputy member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Subcommittee on Human Rights .
