Tiptronic is a brand of Porsche AG for a manual shift mode in automatic transmissions . Although the Tiptronic word mark belongs to Porsche, this name has also been used by Audi and Volkswagen since the 1990s, and even the entire Peugeot system since 2013 .

The name Tiptronic was first used for the four-speed automatic transmission in the Porsche 911 ( type 964 ), which was offered for an additional charge from January 1990 . The transmission built by ZF Friedrichshafen is structurally and conceptually different from the semi-automatic Porsche “Sportomatic” with four or (from model year 1976) three gear steps, which was offered from 1968 to 1980.

The Tiptronic selector lever in the left lane has the normal arrangement of the stages as in an automatic transmission, with a connection from D to a second parallel lane on the right. In this second alley, you switch one level up ('+') or down ('-') by operating the shift lever. In the Tiptronic S version, which was first used in the 1995 model of the Porsche 993 , this function was also integrated into the rocker buttons on the steering wheel. These offer the option of selecting “+” or “-” with the thumb on the right and left side of the steering wheel. On newer Porsche models, there are buttons that are operated by pulling and pressing instead. Audi, on the other hand, uses so-called shift paddles to operate the transmission close to the steering wheel, paddles positioned behind the steering wheel that are operated by pulling. Select “+” on the right and “-” on the left. This variant was also used in part at Porsche.
