Town view with temple

Tiruvalangadu is home to an important Hindu sanctuary, the Vadaranyeswarar temple. The oldest inscriptions in the temple date back to the 5th century, but the temple in its present form dates from the Chola period (12th-13th centuries). The temple of Tiruvalangadu is dedicated to the god Shiva and counts next to the Nataraja temple in Chidambaram , the Minakshi temple in Madurai and the temples Tirunelveli and Courtallam to the "five dance halls" ( Pancha Sabha ), a group of five temples in which Shiva in his appearance as Nataraja , "King of the Dance", performs his cosmic dance ( Tandava ). According to the myth, Shiva is said to have fought a dance contest with the goddess Kali in a banyan forest ( Tiruvalangadu means “sacred banyan forest”) in Tiruvalangadu . He defeated Kali by lifting his left foot over his head in the Urdhva Tandava pose. Shiva's dance in Tiruvalangadu was sung in the 6th century by the hymn poet Karaikal Ammaiyar .
