Tissa ( Arabic تيسة, Central Atlas Tamazight ⵜⵉⵙⵙⴰⵏⵜ Tissant ) is a small town in Morocco in the Taounate province .
Origin of name
Tissa used to be called Tissantz . The term comes from the Berber language and is related to the meaning of the rock salt deposits in the vicinity. The earliest mentions of the place refer to a Berber village that lived mainly on agriculture and cattle breeding.

geography
Tissa is located in the province of Taounate , halfway between Fès (50 km) and the city of Taounate (35 km), somewhat off the winding N8. The place is on the edge of the Rif region , near Oued Lebene and the Korse mountain range.
The place is divided into an upper town on a hill and a lower town at its feet; both parts of the city have a mosque .
Colonial history
The place had its main boom during the time of the French protectorate . In order to control the strategically important access to Fez , the French army placed a camp on the neighboring hill of the village. From this hill they had an unobstructed view of the road, which at the time was just a dirt track.
Apparently there was a good relationship between the local residents and the colonial power, which established schools with French teachers in the city. A Christian cemetery is still visited today by the bereaved of French families. Other structures from this period include a church and a number of flatter structures with gable roofs (instead of the roof terraces typical of the region).
economy
The market starts on Wednesday mornings. It used to be held in the large square on the road to Fez, but has now been moved outside the town. The main street leading through the city center houses most of the economic life. An important source of income is a salt dome that has been exploited for generations .
Culture
Tissa is known for its Fantasia Festival, which is held once a year in October / November. The festival includes a fun fair, sometimes a circus, a large souk (market) and, most importantly, one of the most important folklore events in the region. The Fantasia (Tborida) gave the place the name "Mother of Horses".
climate
Tissa is very hot in summer with temperatures up to 50 ° C and has relatively cold winters. Cyclones are common in the region.
