Taounate ( Arabic تاونات Tawnat , Tarifit ⵜⴰⵡⵏⴰⵜ ) is a city in Morocco . It has been the capital of the province of the same name in the Fès-Meknes region since 1977.
Location and climate
The city of Taounate is located in the southern foothills of the Rif Mountains between Fès and Al Hoceïma at an altitude of about 600 m . The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 655 mm / year) falls almost exclusively in the winter half-year.

The city's population is essentially a mix of Berbers and Arabs ; one speaks Tarifit and Moroccan Arabic .
economy
Agriculture and livestock are practiced in the surrounding area. Mainly wheat is grown, as well as fruit and fruits such as cherries, apples, peaches, figs and olives for oil production. There are cedar and cork oak plantations on the surrounding hills .
history
The history of the place goes back possibly to the time of the Almohads . Three tribal groups ( Meziah , Jaia and Rghiwa ) left the region around the Zerhoun massif near Meknes in the 13th century and settled here.
