The round-leaved tithonia ( Tithonia rotundifolia ) is a species of the sunflower family (Asteraceae).

features

The round-leaved tithonia is an annual plant that reaches heights of up to 4 meters (in cultivation only 0.8 to 1.5 meters). The leaves are broadly heart-shaped. The lower ones are usually three-lobed. The petiole has a length of 40 centimeters. The upper side of the leaves is gray, the underside hairy. The flower heads have a diameter of 5 to 8 (rarely up to 10) centimeters. The ray-flowers are vermilion and broadly ovate. The disc flowers are golden yellow. There are 12 to 16 bracts, the outer ones being pointed.

The flowering period extends from July to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.

Occurrence

The round-leaved tithony occurs in Mexico and Central America on flats, in woody plants and ruderally at altitudes below 1000 meters.

use

The round-leaved tithonia is widely used as an ornamental plant for borders and summer flower beds and as a cut flower. She has been in culture since 1733.
