Titular diocese of Eleutheropolis in Palestine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eleutheropolis in Palestine is a titular bishopric of the Roman Catholic Church .

It goes back to a lost bishopric in the Roman province of Syria Palestine or Palestine Prima . It belonged to the ecclesiastical province of Caesarea in Palestine .

The city, which was originally called Beth Gabra (House of Strong Men), was conquered by the Roman Emperor Vespasian , who slaughtered almost all of the inhabitants. Today the place, now called Beit Djibrin, still has about 1,000 inhabitants.

The first known bishop, Macrinus, dates from 325, but he still had five successors in the 4th century and two in the 6th century.
