Titus Iulius Pollio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Titus Iulius Pollio (full name form possibly Titus Iulius Titi filius Pollia Pollio ) was a member of the Roman equestrian order ( Eques ) living in the 1st century AD . Individual stations of his career are known through two (incompletely preserved) inscriptions, which are dated to 61/62.

Pollio was probably Primus Pilus before becoming a tribune of the Cohors XV Urbana and the Cohors IIII Praetoria . After that he was probably a second time Primus Pilus before he became governor ( procurator ) in the province of Sardinia . He is mentioned by Tacitus in the annals ; It emerges from this that he received an order from Nero in 55 to poison Nero's stepbrother Britannicus with the help of the poisoner Locusta .

Pollio was probably enrolled in the Pollia tribe . In an inscription found near Annecy , a Titus Iulius Voltinia Ustus Pollio is listed. If he is identical with Pollio, his tribe would have been Voltinia and the Titus Iulius Ustus mentioned in the inscription would then probably be a relative. The two are possibly listed in another (incompletely preserved) inscription.

Remarks

  1. Possible full name form after Ségolène Demougin; only the Cognomen Pollio is certain from the inscriptions .
  2. Hans-Georg Pflaum and Ségolène Demougin give the Cohors IIII Praetoria for both inscriptions . The EDCS reading for the inscription ( CIL 10, 7952 ) is [co] h (ortis) III pr (aetoriae) .
  3. a b According to Michel Christol, the inscription ( CIL 12, 2520 ) shows that Pollio became Primus Pilus a second time.
  4. Hans-Georg Pflaum gives as reading of the inscription ( CIL 10, 7863 ) [P] ol (lia tribu) Pollio . The reading of the EDCS is [I] ul (ius) Pollio .
  5. According to Michel Christol, Ustus was the older brother of Pollio.
