Titus Statilius Taurus (consul 26 BC)
Titus Statilius Taurus (* before 60 BC in Rome; † after 10 BC) was a Roman general and politician of the 1st century BC. From the originally Lukan family of Statilii .
Statilius was born before 60 BC. Born in Rome and was accepted into the Senate while Cicero was still alive († 43 BC) . He served Octavian, the later emperor Augustus , as general and commander of the fleet against Sextus Pompey . In 37 BC He became a suffect consul at the side of Agrippa , a childhood friend of Octavian's. After the fall of the triumvir Lepidus , Statilius officiated 36–34 BC. As governor of the province of Africa . For his services there he was allowed to celebrate a triumph as one of the last non-members of the imperial family to be granted this honor . 34/33 BC He led the fighting in Illyria . At the Battle of Actium in 31 BC He commanded the land army while Agrippa commanded the fleet.
After defeating Mark Antony and Cleopatra VII at Actium, Statilius took part in the conquest of northern Spain. 29 BC He fought against the Celtiberian tribes of the Cantabrians and the Asturians . In the same year Statilius had the first stone amphitheater built in Rome on the eastern part of the Field of Mars , which was destroyed in the great fire of Rome at the time of Nero . In 26 BC BC he was again consul , this time as Ordinarius together with Augustus.
