The Tobias Mærsk was one of the world's first semi-container ships that was planned and built as such.
history
The keel of the semi-container ship Tobias Mærsk was built on April 27, 1963 in the new building dock of the Copenhagen shipyard Burmeister & Wain as hull number 764 on behalf of the Copenhagen-based shipping company AP Möller . After its handover in October 1963, the maiden voyage led to the east coast of the United States, after which it opened the AP Möller Lines container service to the Far East.
technology
Superstructures and machinery were arranged aft. The hull had a long forecastle and had six holds, five of which were in front of the superstructure. The weather and steerage hatches were steely Mac Gregor hatch covers. Cargo holds II, III and IV were designed for the transport of containers. In addition to containers and conventional dry cargo, it was also possible to transport refrigerated cargo and vegetable oil and latex in deep tanks . The handling equipment consisted of four pairs of posts for twelve 5-ton cargo booms and eight 10-ton cargo booms. In addition, the Tobias Mærsk had a mast between hatches III and IV, which led two heavy lift booms with a capacity of 25 and 60 tons.
