Tobias Straumann (born May 15, 1966 in Wettingen ) is a Swiss economic historian .

Life

Tobias Straumann studied history, sociology and economic and social history in Zurich , Paris and Bielefeld . In 1995 he did his doctorate with Rudolf Braun at the University of Zurich with the thesis «The creation in the test tube. A History of Basel Chemistry (1860–1920) ». 1995–2000 he worked as a journalist in Zurich, Zug and New York . 2005–2006 he was senior assistant at the Institut de l'histoire économique et sociale at the University of Lausanne . In 2007 he became a private lecturer at the University of Zurich. His post- doctoral thesis , published in 2010, deals with the exchange rate regime of small European states in the 20th century. Straumann has been a lecturer at the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Basel since 2009 and has been an adjunct professor at the Philosophy Faculty of the University of Zurich since spring 2014 .

His main research interests are in European monetary and financial history and Swiss economic history.

Since November 2018 he has been contributing to the “Money & Spirit” column in the NZZ am Sonntag .
