Death by Hanging ( Japanese 絞 死刑 Kōshikei ) is a Japanese film by director Nagisa Ōshima from 1968 .

action

In the style of a documentary , a death chamber is shown, in which an execution will take place. Unexpectedly, R survived the execution .

A film-within-a-film is opened by reconstructing the crimes and childhood of R, who suffered humiliation as a Korean in Japan. A woman appears in the death chamber who pretends to be R's sister and claims that R's crimes were legitimate as a defensive battle between the Koreans and the Japanese. She is executed shortly afterwards. In the end, R is executed.

background

The film is based on the true story of Ri Jin-u ( 李珍 宇 ), an ethnic Korean who murdered two schoolgirls in 1958 and was executed in 1963. He described his murders in detail, which made these accounts as well known as Ri Jin-u himself. Despite his crimes, Ōshima greatly admired Ri Jin-u and suggested that his books be treated as school reading in Japan. See also: Death Penalty in Japan

The influence of Brecht

Death by Hanging is not a realistic film. A total of seven text overlays are made. Brecht's other themes are black humor and the open ending with unresolved contradictions. The use of Brechtian motifs probably came about through Sartre's mediation .

criticism

The lexicon of international films noted: “The ritual endgame behind closed doors thematizes with immense intensity and cool severity the nature of the oppression of a man who, as a Korean, worker and outsider colonized by Japan, rejects the moral norm of the rulers. Oshima's revolt against the guilty state is a bold key work. "
