The Bay of Tokyo ( Japanese 東京湾 , Tōkyō-wan , English Tokyo Bay ) is a bay on the Japanese Pacific coast . The world's largest metropolitan area, the metropolitan region of Japan's capital Tokyo with around 37 million inhabitants (as of 2008), is located on it. The bay is also home to one of the largest Asian ports, namely the port of Yokohama .

An earlier name is Edo Bay ( 江 戸 湾 , Edo-wan ).

The Tōkyō-wan-Aqua-Line , a combination of bridge and tunnel, crosses the bay. The size of the bay tends to decrease due to constant reclamation in the northern part. After the multitude of artificial islands through land reclamation or Azuma-shima , which were created by building canals from a peninsula, Sarushima off Yokosuka is the largest natural island in the bay.

Tokyo Bay: northern part (red) and southern part / Uraga Canal (blue)

Tokyo Bay extends about 75 km from north to south and is about 20 km wide. The area is 1380 km² and the maximum depth (at the mouth) 700 m.

The bay is bounded in the north by the Sumida and in the south by the Pacific Ocean. In the east it is from the Bōsō Peninsula (to Cape Sunosaki ( 洲崎 ), 34 ° 58 '42 "  N , 139 ° 45' 15"  O ) and to the west of the Miura Peninsula (to Cape Tsurugisaki ( 剱崎 ), 35 ° 8 ′ 26 ″  N , 139 ° 40 ′ 43 ″  E ) separated from the Pacific. The almost 30 km long exit of the bay from the line Cape Futtsu-misaki ( 富 津 岬 ; 35 ° 18 ′ 46 ″  N , 139 ° 47 ′ 1 ″  E ) and Cape Kannon-saki ( 観 音 崎 ; 35 ° 15 ′ 23 ″  N , 139 ° 44 ′ 46 ″  E ) is referred to as the Uraga Canal ( 浦 賀 水道 , Uraga-suidō ; 35 ° 10 ′  N , 139 ° 45 ′  E ). In some cases, however, only the area north of the Uraga Canal is seen as Tokyo Bay (in the narrower sense).
