Tokyo Dark ( Japanese 東京 ダ ー ク , Tōkyō dāku ) is an adventure computer game by the independent developer Cherrymochi and was published by Square Enix on September 7, 2017 for Microsoft Windows and macOS . The new edition Tokyo Dark: Remembrance was on November 7, 2019 Nintendo Switch posted on January 10, 2020 for PlayStation 4th

Game mechanics

Tokyo Dark is a genre mix of point-and-click and visual novel with horror elements, puzzle sections and a story that runs differently at certain points depending on the player's input. The decisions of the player have an impact on the personality of the protagonist, which in turn influences events and people around the heroine. The personality of the protagonist is recorded with the help of the so-called SPIN system; S stands for “Sanity” (reason), P for “Professionalism”, I for “Investigation” and N for “Neurosis” (neurosis). Depending on what decisions the player makes and what the SPIN system looks like, the player gets a different ending. After the first round of the game, a mode called "New Game Plus" is unlocked, which allows the player to unlock the remaining endings, but also discover new scenes and an additional ending.

action

The player takes on the role of Detective Itō Ayami (voiced by Asama Hikage). Her partner, Detective Tanaka Kazuki, has been missing for a few days. As she searches for him, she becomes more and more entangled in a mysterious case and is forced to face her own past. One of eleven different endings can be achieved depending on player statistics and the level of insanity.

Characters

  • Detective Itō Ayami
The protagonist of the game and a member of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department Criminal Investigation.
  • Detective Tanaka Kazuki
He is Detective Ito's missing partner.
  • Chief Commissioner Yukimura
The chief commissioner of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department in charge of the case.
  • Reina
A mysterious girl from Detective Ito's past.

development

The game was funded through Kickstarter.com . The target of the campaign was 40,000 CAD and was exceeded by a total of 225,000 CAD. It includes a soundtrack from Reign of Fury vocalist Matt 'Bison' Steed. The animated sequences were produced by Graphinica , while the Japanese writer Ureshino Kimi was responsible for the Japanese localization. Tokyo Dark was inspired by Shenmue , Heavy Rain , Clock Tower and The Blackwell Legacy as well as The Cat Lady and Neverending Nightmares , among others . The German translator Marcel Weyers expressed his interest in translating the game into German in September 2017. The German translation was published on August 4, 2018. Due to legal differences, Weyers had to declare the translation as a "fansub" and publish it as a patch. The locations in the game were modeled on real locations in Tokyo , for example Kamakura or Aokigahara .

An expanded version of the game, titled Tokyo Dark: Remembrance , was announced for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in August 2018 . The new version contains additional content, new endings and the full German translation by Marcel Weyers - for the first time in official form. The Nintendo Switch version was released on November 7, 2019, while the PlayStation 4 version followed on January 10, 2020.

Commenting on the game, Gita Jackson from Kotaku said, “Although it's a cursed mask game, Tokyo Dark is also mostly a story about people. As with the best kinds of horror, it seeks to reveal a fundamental truth about society. "

The game received an 80% rating on Gamespew and co-editor Richard Seagrave said, “Tokyo Dark is one of the most exciting point-and-click adventures I've played in a long time, with its creepy narrative, strong visual style, and atmospheric soundtrack have. The writing style is on point, the pace is rapid, and while it seems pretty linear, the decisions regularly have serious implications. It's one of those games that overwhelms you and doesn't let go until the credits roll. And depending on which ending you get, you want to start all over again and discover another one until you are satisfied with the result. "
