action

Tokyo Mew Mew

On a date with her crush Masaya Aoyama ( 青山 雅 也 ), middle school student Ichigo Momomiya ( 桃 宮 い ち ご ; Ichigo = "strawberry") gets involved in a failed experiment. Their genes are mixed with those of the Iriomote cat . When both are attacked by a mutant rat soon after, Ichigo transforms into Mew Ichigo , with cat abilities, ears and tail. As this she can defeat the rat and the mysterious Ryou Shirogane explains to her that she should now be used as a biological weapon against alien attackers. To keep this a secret, however, she works from now on in the Café Mew Mew , which also serves as the base. Her boyfriend is also not allowed to find out about it. Soon five girls come together, whose genes have been mixed with those of extinct or endangered species and who are now supposed to fight against animals, chimeras, mutated by the alien Kisshu. Besides Ichigo, these five are: Minto Aizawa (Saphir Lori; Minto = mint) ( 藍 沢 み ん と , Aizawa Minto ), Retasu Midorikawa (Indian porpoise) ( 碧川 れ た す , Midorikawa Retasu ; Retasu = salad), Purin Fuong called pudding ( Golden lion tamarin ) ( 黄 歩 鈴 ; Purine = "pudding") and Zakuro Fujiwara (gray wolf) ( 藤原 ざ く ろ ; Zakuro = " pomegranate ").

So they can inflict several defeats on the aliens, but Ichigo always gets into difficult situations when she is not in control of her transformation in everyday life, especially in the presence of Masayas. Finally, it turns out that Ryou Shirogane also has the ability to transform into an animal and thus helps Ichigo again and again in the form of a cat. But Kisshu is also getting closer to his goal of awakening the legendary Deep Blue . This lives in Masaya and begins to wake up, Masaya can control him less and less.

Tokyo Mew Mew a la Mode

Ryo wants to start a new Mew project because Ichigo has traveled to England with Aoyama and the other members of Tokyo Mew Mew no longer have a leader. After the 12-year-old Berry Shirayuki ( 白雪 ベ リ ー , Shirayuki Berī ; Berī = berī) unexpectedly enters the Café Mew Mew and turns into a Mew Mew because Ryo's new experiment suddenly starts, she soon becomes the new leader of the Mew Mews . Berry carries the genes of the amami rabbit and the pampas cat , which means that she takes on the characteristics of these two animals: she can jump unusually high, hears the steps of her classmates herself and is constantly craving carrots. With the other Mew Mew's she has to fight the remaining chimeras and also face the Saint Rose Crusaders who want to conquer Tokyo. Ichigo returns too. Berry later finds out that she feels more than just friendship for her sandpit friend Tasuku Meguro.

Conception

The focus of the plot is the relationship between Ichigo and her first love Masaya and the fight against the destruction of nature by an undefined enemy. The fighters preserved all the characteristics of extinct or threatened animal species, which particularly highlights the serious background of the topic.

reception

According to Splashcomics, the manga hardly offers any new ideas compared to other Magical Girl series such as Sailor Moon or Wedding Peach , and the sayings uttered in the fight are annoying in the long run. What is positively emphasized, however, is that environmental protection is a topic and that the cute characters typical of the genre and the romance were implemented well. The drawing style is simple and not very detailed. Since the plot is straightforward and harmless, the series is particularly recommended for young readers who like the genre. The manga is rather nothing for older readers.
