Tom Henning Øvrebø (born June 26, 1966 ) is a former Norwegian football referee .

career

Øvrebø was in charge of games in the Norwegian first division from September 20, 1992 . From 1994 onwards he was a FIFA referee. In December 2007 he was nominated as one of twelve referees for the 2008 European Football Championship . There he led the game between Germany and Poland, as well as the game between Italy and Romania. After the second game, in which he wrongly failed to score an Italian goal for offside , and whistled a controversial penalty against Italy, he was no longer used in the tournament.

On May 6, 2009 Øvrebø chaired the Champions League semi-final second leg between Chelsea and FC Barcelona at Stamford Bridge and made numerous controversial decisions against the hosts. Therefore Øvrebø was the focus of tumultuous scenes towards the end and after the game. He was besieged and abused by players from Chelsea FC, in particular Didier Drogba and Michael Ballack , and had to be escorted from the field to his cabin by stewards, protected from the field. According to newspaper reports, Øvrebø received a series of death threats after the match, which led him to change hotels and return home under police protection. In 2018, Øvrebø confessed that it was not his best day and that he had made a number of mistakes, which is why he could not be proud of the management of this game.

Even after the first leg of the first knockout round of the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League between FC Bayern Munich and Fiorentina , Øvrebø was criticized for not denying the winning goal scored by Miroslav Klose from offside for Bayern. However, Øvrebø later expressed his regret over the wrong decision, stating that he had relied on his assistant on the sidelines for the scene leading to the goal.

In May 2010 Øvrebø ended his international career after not being nominated for the 2010 World Cup .

Øvrebø studied psychology at the University of Oslo and graduated successfully in 1998.
