Thomas Kiefer (rower)

Thomas "Tom" Nisbit Kiefer (born February 25, 1958 in Sharon , Connecticut ) is a former rower from the United States who was second in the 1984 Olympics in the four-man team .

Athletic career

At the Junior World Championships in 1975, the 1.90 m tall Thomas Kiefer took seventh place with eighth , in 1976 he won the bronze medal in two with helmsman . At the Pan American Games in 1979 he won silver in two with helmsman. The Northwestern University student first took part in world championships in the adult class in 1981. At the World Championships in Munich he won the bronze medal behind the boats from the USSR and the United Kingdom with the eighth. In the following year, the eighth finished fourth at the World Championships in Lucerne .

After finishing his studies Kiefer joined the Penn Athletic Club in Philadelphia. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Thomas Kiefer, Gregory Springer , Michael Bach , Edward Ives and helmsman John Stillings crossed the finish line second behind the British and second behind the New Zealanders in the rebound. In the final, the British won with a one-and-a-half second lead over the Americans, who for their part were over three seconds ahead of the third-placed New Zealanders. At the World Championships in 1985 in Hazewinkel and 1986 in Nottingham, Kiefer won bronze with eighth.

Kiefer later worked in a shipping company. He also worked as a senior rowing coach in Boston.
