Tom Mather

Tom Mather (* 1888 in Chorley , Lancashire , † 1957 in Stoke-on-Trent ) was an English football player and coach .

Mather began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Manchester City and Bolton Wanderers before taking over the head coaching position from Will Settle at Bolton. In 1920 Mather took over the coaching position at Southend United . After only one year, however, the collaboration was ended. In 1923 he took over the coaching post at Stoke City with whom he won the Third Division North in 1927 and the Second Division in 1932. In 1935 he was introduced as the coach of Newcastle United . However, when the Second World War broke out in 1939, he resigned. After the war, he took over the coaching post of Leicester City and later Kilmarnock . He then moved to Stoke-on-Trent and worked for a catering company. Mather became known because, under his leadership, Stanley Matthews, one of the greatest English footballers made his debut at Stoke City.
