Tom Schmitt

Tom Schmitt (* 1929 in Columbus / Ohio ) is an American painter, video and computer artist.

Schmitt grew up in Lincoln , Nebraska . He studied at the University of Nebraska until 1951 , later at Mexico City College . In 1958 he studied printmaking with Rudy Pozzatti at Indiana University .

From 1963 to 1964 he taught at Indiana University , after which he lived as a painter in Carlisle / Pennsylvania , and from 1968 in Paris. From 1969 to 1972 he gave guest lectures at Connecticut College in New London .

Until 1972 Schmitt was active as a painter who stylistically can be assigned to minimalism . From 1972 to 1975 Schmitt worked as a video artist. Since 1982 only computer-generated works have been created. Solo exhibitions of his works took place among others. a. at the University of Nebraska Art Galleries (1959), Munson Gallery in New Haven (1967), Calhoun College at Yale University (1972) and the Bass Museum of Art (2004).

In addition to private collections, there are works by Schmitt u. a. in the collections of the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach, the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Nebraska, the Louisville Art Center , Indiana University, the Indianapolis Museum of Art in Indianapolis, and Dickinson College in Carlisle.
