It is considered to have shaped the democratization of broadcasting in the GDR during and after the fall of the Wall.

Life

After graduating from high school in Eisenhüttenstadt in 1962 , Hannelore Steer studied African Studies at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig . In 1967 she graduated and started working for Radio Berlin International (RBI) as a translator, speaker, reporter and editor and worked for the programs in Swahili . From 1970 she headed the Swahili translators and speakers group at RBI. At the same time, she graduated from the technical college for journalism in Leipzig in 1971/72 . In 1986 she was appointed head of the Africa editorial team at RBI. Since March 7, 2009 she has been a member of the media council of Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg .

Turning time

At the beginning of 1990, the RBI staff elected Hannelore Steer as editor-in-chief. During this time she promoted the institutional and informal cooperation between RBI and Deutscher Welle . Their goal to merge parts of RBI with Deutsche Welle failed because of the political leaders. After RBI had ceased broadcasting on the eve of German unification, Deutsche Welle took over the frequencies and transmission systems from RBI, but only five of 130 employees.

In October 1990 Hannelore Steer became program director and deputy director of the Funkhaus Berlin, the former GDR radio station. Until its dissolution at the end of 1991 as a result of the unification agreement, she was responsible for the programs Berliner Rundfunk , DT 64 , Radio aktuell and DS Kultur .

In 2003, Hannelore Steer received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for her work during the fall of the Berlin Wall and after. According to the rationale, it made a significant contribution to the democratization process in GDR radio.

ORB and rbb

The ORB began its work on January 1, 1992. Hannelore Steer was initially broadcast manager and from August 5, 1992, editor-in-chief of Landeswelle Antenne Brandenburg . On July 2, 1996, the ORB Broadcasting Council elected her radio director and deputy director; she took office in December. She was confirmed in office in 2001. In 1997, the ORB reorganized its radio offering and founded - together with the SFB - radioeins .

In May 2003 SFB and ORB merged to form Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb). Hannelore Steer became the first radio director of the rbb and on September 8, 2003 also elected deputy director. The re-establishment of a joint cultural program on December 1, 2003 is largely due to their initiative and impulses. The new cultural radio replaces the Radio 3 (ORB) and Radio Kultur (SFB) programs .

Hannelore Steer was a member of the shareholders' meeting of the Society for the Promotion of Broadcasting Supply (GARV) until it was dissolved in 2008 .
