Arthur Maximilian Miller (born June 16, 1901 in Mindelheim , † February 18, 1992 in Ottobeuren ) was a German writer .

Life

AM Miller's house in Kornau (1953 - 1989), built as a holiday home by Paul Bonatz (1936)

After attending the preparatory school in Mindelheim for three years, Miller went to Lauingen an der Donau to attend the teacher training institute in 1918 . After graduating, he completed internships at elementary schools in Mindelheim, Wiggensbach , Ettringen and Haselbach (near Ehekirchen). It was also around this time that Miller wrote his first book, The Year of Maturity , which is about the difficult living conditions of a teacher.

In 1924 he took the employment test for school service and taught at the elementary school in Immenstadt . In 1926, Miller was appointed a teacher. In 1938 he left the elementary school in Immenstadt and then taught at a small village school in Kornau near Oberstdorf . Miller hardly cared about the day-to-day and party politics of the National Socialists. Topics critical of the times and society rarely appear in his works. He could not escape Hitler's compulsory coordination of all teachers. The war took a heavy toll on his unstable health and inner world.

After the end of the Second World War , Miller was not allowed to practice his profession for two years because of his poor health. In 1947 he was reinstated as a teacher by the American military government, and in 1955 he was promoted to senior teacher . However, he went into early retirement in 1959 for health reasons . Miller continued to live in Kornau, devoted himself entirely to his writing activities and had lived in a holiday home built by Paul Bonatz in 1936 since 1953 . In 1989 he and his wife Magdalena (née Kleiner), whom he married in 1930, moved to Ottobeuren. Magdalena preceded him in death. Miller found his final resting place in the forest cemetery in Oberstdorf.

After his death, the Swabian district took over his estate. The house in Kornau (house number 51), his poetry , has been the seat of the Maximilian Miller Foundation Haus Bonatz since June 2010, largely unchanged and can be viewed. It gives a picture of the living and working atmosphere of the writer.
