Toma is a band from Hamburg , which was founded in 2008 by music producer Toma Moon .

The music is dubbed “German Alternative” or “German Indie Rock” by the band itself and can be described as pop-heavy indie / alternative rock. Above all, the partly abstract, melancholy and thoughtful German texts repeatedly led to the trio being assigned to the Hamburg School .

history

The origins of Toma go back to the nineties and lead to Görlitz , the hometown of the founder, singer and multi-instrumentalist Toma Moon ( Thomas Barth ).

The music producer, who lives in Hamburg, cited his former band Cyberspace Junkies as the musical root of Toma in an interview. Various sampler contributions and two albums can be found by the indie pop band, which broke up in 2002 after completing the second long player long-playing record .

In the summer of 2008 Toma Moon started production of the first Toma album Alles wird gut . He wrote the songs, played all the instruments himself and produced the record completely single-handedly, including mixing and mastering. After completion in the spring of 2009, he immediately began to put together a live band and alongside his partner Jessica Baran-Surel , who took over the part of the keyboardist, Richard Welschhoff joined on bass. The only thing missing was the right drummer. At some point during a live production with Ron Spielmann , Moon was having dinner with Benny Greb and after hearing the material, Greb immediately had a name ready: Jan Kröger , Greb's former student, turned out to be a stroke of luck and is now one of Tomas and Tomas’s closest friends is involved on the drums in almost every project of the music producer.

At the end of the year Alles wird gut (still as a promo edition) was voted one of the best records of 2009 by regioactive.de. In 2010, Toma became a newcomer of the week and month several times (including Radio Energy, NDR2), on March 20 the first single was released every day on itunes, amazon etc., the first concerts were played, the single was broadcast across Germany on the radio and on November 19th Sunbase Records released the album digitally. In April 2011, Jeden Tag also appeared on the Musikmesse sampler AUDIOSURF 2011 published by regioactive.de, Soundcheck and Visions , at the same time as the video for the single and on May 6, 2011 the album was finally available on CD.

The big change came in 2011. Toma Moon, dissatisfied with the overall situation, broke up the quartet and formed the rock trio, still with Jan Kröger on drums. To do this, he resorted to a tried and tested recipe for inventing musicians and consulted with Markus Setzer , who, like Benny Greb two years earlier for drums, now also had the right candidate on bass up his sleeve and so Ben Nestler joined the team.

In autumn 2011 the three hid in the studio for a weekend and played six songs at the so-called "Moon Base Live Studio Sessions" that were supposed to serve as a demo for organizers, who were completely irritated every time the rock trio the thunderstorm went off after expecting something completely different based on the first pop record. But it all turned out so well that the decision was made to publish the whole thing with a completely new concept. This is how I think I'll do it loud , a record where everything was made by myself. The CDs were burned, the covers designed together with the fans at concerts and then given away. The band encouraged people to pass on the songs, make remixes or record their own videos. In the 07/2012 issue of Soundcheck Magazine, Toma was again named Newcomer of the Month and in the summer of 2012 the next single I think I make blue with a video was released, which was then voted the second most successful song in 2012 by regioactive.de. In addition, the single stayed in the top 100 (including top 10) of the official German newcomer charts for more than 30 weeks. In June 2015 Sunbase Records released the “Mondbasis Live Studio Sessions” digitally under the name I think I'll do it loudly .

Then it got quiet around the band. Toma Moon worked intensively with two musician / producer friends on another project and released a debut album with Notion Sound Collective in May 2013, which should cause quite a stir. He then brought his two colleagues from Toma as a rhythm section for the live band and so the entire band was initially part of a larger project and therefore fully utilized. In the spring of 2015 Toma announced a new studio album for 2015 on their own website and the band retired to the studio at Mondbasis Hamburg . In January 2016, the first single, The Say , finally came out of production and into the online stores and was released physically exclusively on The Finest Noise Der Sampler, Vol. 33 ( noisy Neighbors ). Since then the band has been quiet again, which is probably due to Moon's many productions in their own studio and the associated lack of time.
