Thomas Edward "Tommy" Bing (born November 24, 1931 in Broadstairs , † May 18, 2015 in Margate ) was an English football player .

Career

Bing was already in December 1947 at the age of 16 for the reserves of Margate FC , but had to wait until the 1950/51 season before he made his debut for the first team in the Kent League . After his brother Doug left to West Ham United , he moved to his position on the right wing in the starting XI. His achievements attracted interest from some clubs from the Football League , but began his military service in December 1951 . He is said to have played in higher-class football during his stationing in Germany. With the end of Army service in November 1953, he returned to Margate and won the Kent League Cup with the team in May 1954 . At the start of the 1954/55 season, Bing was part of the reserve team, but was used in a friendly game of the first team against Tottenham Hotspur in September 1954 . He was discovered by Bill Nicholson and immediately brought to Tottenham for a four-digit transfer fee.

At Tottenham Bing played regularly for the reserve team, in the summer of 1957 he took part with the professional team on a North American tour and came in the course of two missions. His only competitive game for the professional team he completed on October 19, 1957 on the right wing in the first division game against Bolton Wanderers , when the Welsh Terry Medwin was absent because of an international match against England.

In the summer of 1959, Bing returned to Margate FC, now playing in the Southern League , but had to pause again and again due to persistent injury problems. Due to stubborn cartilage damage , he ended his career on medical advice in January 1962, but played again briefly for Margate in the 1963/64 season. In addition to soccer, Bing, who worked full-time as a plumber, also ran cricket and, when he was over 50, played for Minster's , where in 1984 he set the best batting average within the team.
