Toni Hochegger (born August 10, 1932 in St. Johann , Styria , † July 2, 2013 in Kluse , Emsland) was an Austrian horse artist. He became famous for his performance with a bed horse.

Life

When Toni Hochegger finished his apprenticeship, he decided to join the Swiss Knie circus in 1951 to go abroad. At first he worked as a zoo keeper. The Knie family soon discovered his talent and offered Toni Hochegger further training, so he finally advanced to become the company's animal trainer in 1957. He not only worked with the animals of the Knie family in the Swiss company, but also toured all of Europe to demonstrate the horses and also the "exotic animals" (hippopotamus, zebras, giraffes, ...) from the Knie circus. He stayed with the company for 18 years before he went into business for himself and appeared in South America with his own horse show.

For many years he worked for various circus companies, especially as a trainer for horses and even elephants. Word of his talent for dressage of all kinds of animals got around, so he even got dressage assignments in Australia.

The bed horse

When his wife Bärbel Hochegger ( Barbara Mascott ) gave him her own horse for the tenth wedding anniversary in 1974, his life took a new turn. For two years he took his time to his horse Jacket train . At her bed horse number, Jacket sat on a bed, lay down, and covered herself. Racket Jacket and Toni had a lot of success with this funny performance .

The performance was not tied to a circus ring. The couple was not only able to perform in various circus companies, but also in large halls or outdoors, often at horse-riding and jumping tournaments as a supporting program. The good relationship of trust between Jacket and Toni allowed them to work on small stages in theaters or in television studios. Toni appeared with Jacket in various TV shows, such as: Stars in der Manege , clever! - The show that creates knowledge , ZDF-Fernsehgarten , Der Musikantenstadl with Karl Moik, Die Verflixte 7 with Rudi Carrell or Die Pyramid . For the appearance as "talking horse Haferkamp" in the show Schaufenster Düsseldorf, Jacket drove without hesitation in an elevator of the Düsseldorf television tower.

'Jacket and Toni performed at the Elsper Karl May Festival (also called Elspe Festival ) for a few years before' Jacket went into well-deserved retirement on the family farm and first passed the baton to the horse Pascha and later to the horse Joker . Toni achieved further successes with the two successors to Jacket . He passed on his knowledge to his daughter Rosi Hochegger .

Toni Hochegger died a quick and peaceful death on his farm in Kluse / Emsland in 2013 after a long, serious illness.
