Toni Schneiders (born May 13, 1920 in Urbar ; † August 4, 2006 in Lindau (Lake Constance) ) was a German photographer .

life and work

Toni Schneiders completed a photography apprenticeship in the Koblenz studio Menzel from 1935, which he completed on April 21, 1938 with the master's examination. During the Second World War , he was initially employed as a soldier in the photo office and from 1942 as a war correspondent in France and Italy. After the war he returned to Koblenz and created not only reports but also advertising and travel photographs. In 1946 he moved to Meersburg , where he opened a photo studio in 1948, and in 1949 Schneiders settled in Lindau as a self-employed photojournalist , where, after having worked in Hamburg, he lived and worked with his wife Ingeborg from 1952 until his death in 2006. His archive is in the FC Gundlach Foundation in Hamburg, his war photography in the Federal Archives in Koblenz.

In 1949, Schneiders co-founded the avant-garde group of photographers fotoform, alongside Siegfried Lauterwasser , Peter Keetman , Wolfgang Reisewitz , Otto Steinert and Ludwig Windstosser . With their graphically designed images, the fotoform photographers tied in with the photographic tendencies of the 1920s and early 1930s and drew attention to the creative possibilities of photography. Toni Schneiders was also significantly involved in the development of subjective photography in the 1950s, which gained international fame through the exhibitions and publications compiled by Otto Steinert. Until his death in 2005, Schneiders was in close contact with Peter Keetman. Compared to those of his companions, Toni Schneiders' recordings are distinguished by his sensitive images of people in everyday life.

In commercial terms, Schneiders was essentially active for publishers who published photographic books on cities, countries and regions. For these illustrated books he traveled to Germany, Europe, North Africa and Southeast Asia since 1953. In 1970 he began to build up his picture archive on European art and cultural history.
